Maybe you have heard about meditation before, and shunned it, thinking that it was only something New Age devotees do. Although you are correct in a way, the New Agers don’t have the market cornered on meditation. Think back to the Psalms, where David and other lovers of God expressed their appreciation for Him and His creation through “meditation”.
“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalms 19:14
Meditation simply means concentration, contemplation, reflection, deep thought. There is nothing wrong with this. In fact, you should meditate upon good things, instead of concentrating on negative things, in order to maintain a Godly outlook on life. You can only be the best that you can be, your life can only have the good effects on others that it should, by proper and positive meditation.
Perhaps you’re not the kind who is cut out for sitting cross-legged on a Yoga mat and doing a meditation routine. That doesn’t mean that meditation isn’t for you at all. There are many ways to meditate, some more formal than others.
Some people find that they must sequester themselves away from all kinds of distractions from the outside world, creating their own little bubble of tranquility, within which they can commune with God and calm themselves. Others find they meditate best while praying, whether in church or by themselves. Still others meditate by walking on a beach or through a park, feeling the breeze on their faces and listening to the sounds of nature. These are all ways to meditate, and none of them is wrong.
Meditation really is for everyone. It has been clinically shown to lower stress levels. It is good for your blood pressure—and much less expensive than medication! It is an easy way to get your mind centered and focused on the important things in life. Read up on meditation and find out the best way for you to bring this positive, beneficial and centering practice into your life.
